MD 1983 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 640… FOR EASTERN NH…MAINE
Mesoscale Discussion 1983
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0258 PM CDT Sun Aug 13 2023
Areas affected…eastern NH…Maine
Concerning…Severe Thunderstorm Watch 640…
Valid 131958Z – 132100Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 640
continues.
SUMMARY…The risk for isolated large hail and damaging gusts will
continue across the watch area. The greatest severe risk through
5pm EDT is over central Maine in association with a few multicells
and supercells.
DISCUSSION…Visible-satellite imagery shows a destabilizing cumulus
field over northern Maine, which is located downstream of
strong/severe thunderstorm activity. Surface temperatures are
gradually warming into the lower 70s where the stratus has eroded
for more than 1 hour, and this warmer and increasingly destabilizing
boundary layer will become more favorable for the ongoing storms to
maintain vigor as they move into northern portions of Maine. As
such, the greatest risk for large hail and damaging gusts will occur
with storms over central Maine as they move east near I-95.
Farther southwest, additional storms will move into western parts of
Maine and continue to develop over NH over the next 1-2 hours. It
is unclear regarding the coverage of severe activity with these
storms since some convective overturning via outflow has spread
across parts of western/southern Maine.
