MD 1990 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 646… FOR SOUTHEAST MO INTO EXTREME SOUTHERN IL/WESTERN KY
Mesoscale Discussion 1990
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0238 AM CDT Mon Aug 14 2023
Areas affected…Southeast MO into extreme southern IL/western KY
Concerning…Severe Thunderstorm Watch 646…
Valid 140738Z – 140915Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 646
continues.
SUMMARY…Isolated damaging gusts remain possible early this
morning.
DISCUSSION…The remnant of a storm cluster that earlier produced
measured severe gusts over southwest MO is merging into a
slow-moving cluster of storms that has developed within a
warm-advection regime across extreme southeast MO. The
warm-advection storms have occasionally shown modest midlevel
rotation, and this may continue given favorably veering wind
profiles noted in the KPAH VWP. These storms have struggled to
attain severe intensity, but a brief uptick in storm intensity and
damaging-gust potential is possible as the remnant cluster
approaching from the west overtakes the stronger slow-moving cells.
Local expansion of WW 646 may need to be considered if a notable
uptick occurs, but with the longer-term threat expected to remain
rather isolated, new downstream watch issuance is unlikely.
