Mesoscale Discussion 2096
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

Areas affected…Portions of the Mid-Atlantic

Concerning…Severe Thunderstorm Watch 673…

Valid 071906Z – 072030Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 673
continues.

SUMMARY…The greatest threat for scattered damaging winds and
isolated severe hail will spread northeastward this afternoon from
parts of central Maryland/Pennsylvania into eastern Pennsylvania and
southern New York.

DISCUSSION…Several severe/damaging wind gusts and isolated hail up
to 1.25 inches in diameter have been reported with convection across
the eastern WV Panhandle, far northern VA, and parts of central
MD/PA over the past few hours. Recent radar trends show some
clustering in central PA, and this trend will probably continue
through the rest of the afternoon as convection moves northeastward
across central/eastern PA into southern NY and vicinity. Steepened
low-level lapse rates of 8+ C/km and ample DCAPE should allow for
easy momentum transfer of strong downdraft winds to the surface.
Scattered damaging winds around 50-60 mph will continue to be the
main concern with this activity this afternoon. Somewhat more
discrete convection ahead of the loosely organized cluster in
central PA should also continue to pose an isolated severe hail
threat in the short term.
