MD 0651 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 187… FOR CENTRAL KS AND SOUTH-CENTRAL NE

Mesoscale Discussion 0651
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0158 PM CDT Mon May 06 2024

Areas affected…Central KS and south-central NE

Concerning…Tornado Watch 187…

Valid 061858Z – 062030Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 187 continues.

SUMMARY…Overall severe threat, primarily in the form of large hail
through late afternoon within WW 187, should be confined to central
Kansas into south-central Nebraska. The tornado threat should
increase, mainly across the Kansas portion of the watch.

DISCUSSION…A convective arc across south-central NE to
west-central KS has produced a few reports of large hail reported up
to 1.25 inches in diameter. Pervasive stratus downstream has slowed
destabilization farther east and north, especially within the NE
portion of the watch. Current expectations are that the severe
threat will largely remain confined to the southern portion of the
watch over the next few hours where a plume of 1000-2000 J/kg of
MLCAPE is common. 18Z DDC sounding sampled some reduction in
low-level hodograph curvature, as indicated by its VWP time-series.
Still, along the northern extent of the instability plume in
north-central KS, more backed low-level flow will foster a threat of
tornadoes, focused along the I-70 corridor.
