Mesoscale Discussion 2136
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1254 AM CDT Mon Sep 11 2023

Areas affected…Eastern TX Panhandle…TX South Plains…Southwest
OK

Concerning…Severe Thunderstorm Watch 681…

Valid 110554Z – 110800Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 681
continues.

SUMMARY…Isolated strong to severe gusts will remain possible for
the next few hours.

DISCUSSION…Regional radar imagery shows an eastward-progressing
convective line extending from Gray and Wheeler Counties in the
eastern TX Panhandle southwestward to Lubbock and Lynn Counties in
the TX South Plains. Strongest updrafts, as evidenced by echo tops,
are over the northern portion of the line in the vicinity of Hall
County TX. Storm motion is estimated at 30 to 35 kt, taking it to
the TX Panhandle/western OK border between 0600Z and 0630Z. Several
severe wind gusts have been observed with this line, including a
significant-severe wind gust of 83 mph in Gray County TX at 0514Z.

Buoyancy drops off significantly across western OK, and the general
expectation is for the overall updraft intensity to diminish with
continued eastward progression. Even so, given the warm and dry
sub-cloud environment and associated negative buoyancy, isolated
strong to severe gusts will remain possible for the next hour or
two. Strong updrafts may persist a bit longer within the southern
portion of the line, where more buoyancy remains in place to the
east of the line. Isolated gusts will remain possible within this
portion of the line as well.
